I’m having heaps of fun constantly learning more things photography over here. Like I mentioned on Monday night, I edited my first RAW image, but never got to post it for you. Tonight I have 3 high quality images for you, and I’m really excited about all of them. The quality you get when editing a RAW image is so much better than a JPEG for editing!
To top everything all off tonight I finally got to hand my camera in to Harvey Norman to be sent away and tested for focusing issues. I was very nervous about this and how I would go taking photos with my phone for about 2 weeks. Turns out, I may not have to wait that long. They took my camera away straight away, and gave me store credit, so I get to purchase a new camera straight away. Hello upgrade! I had the Canon 1100D and their next model up from this – the 1200D, is a big step in quality even if I don’t manage to go up to the next series, the 6/700D. I didn’t choose a camera today though – a hungry, tired, manic one year old does not make fun for serious decisions. Also this allowed me the night to try find bargains online as Harvey Norman will price match!
I’ve also been seeing a fair bit about free lensing lately – must be all the rage somewhere. It’s where you detach your lens from your camera, but still hold it fairly close and shoot away. Anyway, I gave that a go this morning. Not quite sure if I was doing it right, and forgot to upload those images before removing my memory card from the camera to look at them more closely. So in the mean time, I’ll try read up on this subject a bit more; just keep your eyes peeled down the track for some of these shots.
DAY 20
DAY 21
DAY 22.
Hope you enjoyed this lot as much as me,

I don’t know why I’m so worried about going RAW, I think it just means more work, what did you use to edit your RAW images?

Oh also great photos! I’m trying to get my courage up to take photos out in stores and stuff, hopefully by the end of this project.

Just the canon software my camera came with. Digital photo professional. I normally use picasa for my jpegs. I always thought itd be more hard work but when then i had actually taken the photos and saw the difference between the raw and the jpeg on picasa it was crazy. And im just loving how ive got that much more flexibility now as well. Its not such a disaster if u get huge highlights or incorrect white balance! You should definitly give it a go!

Hmmm I wonder if my Nikon came with software for that, I know it came with a disc, I’ll have to check that out. I have Photoshop CS2, (Adobe gives it away free on their website) and I feel like I found something on there that did it too but it was so hard to find.

I think though if i wanted to edit out a spot or something small like that, id still have to use picasa.

Sweet photo of your daughter. There are lots of good editing programs. Even thought Apple has stopped updating Aperture, it is an excellent program for organizing files and editing. Hopefully, the next app Apple puts out for photos will be as good. Lightroom is also very good. Enjoy and definitely shoot RAW for your serious work.

The B/W of your daughter is just darling! I can practically hear her squeal with delight! Also like the day at the supermarket – it’s so real, so normal and you did a lovely job with the composition. In reading your comments regarding focal point, my first thought was what f/stop were you shooting at and did you set an individual focal point or was it auto? Usually an auto focus will pick what ever is closest to the lens that matches up with the f/stop (at least that’s my understanding). I like the shot the way it is.

Cant quite remember my f stop but im guessing it was at about 4 as this was just my kit lens. And i did choose a focus point manually. I have since taken my camera in for this focussing problem and theyve refunded me, so just waiting for payday to upgrade a camera with slighty faster burst shutter speed and higher MPs. 😊

If you want a really fun, fast, and inexpensive lens… pick up the “nifty fifty” – it’s a 50mm prime lens and the lower tier starts at f/1.8. It’s about $120 (new/US) and packs a big bang for the buck! I am finding f/2.8 is the sweet spot for portraits 🙂

Yea i know, ive got that one already 😁but when i go out im just not finding that one so flexible. But agree with you on the sweet spot. I think my best pics with that are definitely between 2.2 or 2.8. For a second lens (not including 18-55kit) im thinking tamron 10-24mm on a crop sensor camera. Might be a bit more versatile for indoor lifestyle shots than another prime but also take good scenic ones – as i still dont know what path of photography i really want to go down yet either. But not to sure if im right. Do you have any suggestions for a second lens?

I’m looking at the Canon 24mm f/2.8 pancake for my next lens (it’s about $150 US) – have read excellent reviews for it and it’s designed for crop sensor as the equivalent of the 40mm pancake for full frame. Hoping to pick it up later today for a shoot tomorrow. My first non-kit lens was the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 and it has some macro functions on it and is designed specifically for crop sensor. It has been my go-to lens since I bought it nearly two years ago and when you factor in crop sensor, the 250mm equivalent to full frame zoom is about a 400mm reach which is perfect if I’m shooting birds or other wildlife. It has image stabilization and I just can’t say enough good things about it. It has been worth every penny and since buying it, I haven’t touched either of my kit lens. Hope this helps!
